As people age, everyday tasks, such as staying in touch with family members, remembering to take medication and even tying shoelaces can become difficult. However, with the new products and technology available today, this needn't be the case.
There are a myriad of products on the market that help make seniors’ lives easier. Here are six products - some new, some have been around for a while - designed to promote independence, good health and social connection.
The Phillips medication dispenser ($49 per month) makes a sound to remind seniors that it's time to take their medicine, and then dispenses the correct dosage. This system covers up to 40 days at a time, and has features such as text messaging a caregiver if a dosage is skipped.
Telikin ($1,079) is a computer for seniors who need less monitoring and are more focused on staying connected with others. It offers video chat, Internet, photo-sharing, and more in a touchscreen format that makes using a computer much more simple.
Perma Ty shoelaces ($6.60 for three pairs) look like regular shoelaces but are elastic so seniors can easily slip their feet in and out of their shoes without having to tie anything (which can be difficult for people with arthritis, for example).
The Perfect Sleep Chair ($1,999) is for seniors who have trouble sleeping lying down in a bed for any reason, whether it's heart problems, heartburn, back or hip pain. It is made with Dura-Lux leather and hi-density foam and features heat, massage, recline, and lift settings. It can be positioned in numerous positions for comfort, including the zero gravity position.
TV Ears (starts at $129.95) are great for seniors with hearing loss to watch TV without having to crank up the volume. It allows both people with hearing impairment and those with intact hearing to comfortably watch TV together.
The Securus GPS emergency response tracker (starts at $99.95) allows seniors to call for help no matter where they are. It doesn't require a base station or even a landline phone as it uses cellular technology. The GPS locator can also track dementia or Alzheimer's patients who may have wandered.
No matter what your loved one needs, chances are, there is some kind of solution for it! Products and technology have come a long way and can play an important role in your facilitating your loved one's lifestyle.
